YOUR BAND COUNCIL

  • Victor Back

    Vic is an elder from Kwantlen. His Great Grandfather William Henry Emptage was chief of Fort Langley Reserve until he left the reserve to save his children from residential schools. Vic grew up in Fort Langley with his mom Lottie and Dad Verner who passed away tragically in 1948 when Vic was only 4 years old and his sister Verna. He started working at an early age of 13 years as a deckhand on a commercial fishing boat. He became a cab driver and then became partner and manager of what is known today as Langley Taxi. He went on to owning various companies through the years and eventually went back to driving for different cab companies and Airport Link Shuttle until retiring in 2010. Vic had 2 sons (Vern and Vance) with his ex wife and remarried in 2008 to Carmen and helped raise her 3 sons (Shaun, Zac, and Lukas). They moved onto Kwantlen in 2010. Today they are happily raising their Great Niece and Nephew (Bella and Tate). Victor was elected in the 2022 sƛ̓ənəq.

  • Brandon Gabriel

    Brandon Gabriel- Kwelexwelsten is the eldest grandson of the late Grand Chief Joe Gabriel, and the son of the eldest daughter, Cheryl Gabriel. His father is Lekeyten. Brandon comes from the Gabriel, Joe, and Sepass families on his mother's side, and the Fillardeau, Leon, and mix of families from Sts'ailes to Musqueam. Kwelexwelsten is a name bestowed on Brandon in 2012 from the Gaurin and Point side of his family in Musqueam, the Pierre and Sam families in Katzie, and Gabriel family in Kwantlen, as the name comes from Kwantlen's ancient village in present day New Westminister, which was presided over these great families since time immemorial. Born and raised on the Kwantlen First Nation Reserve in Fort Langley BC, Canada. He was educated in Cultural Anthropology, Visual Art, and Marketing at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, then received his Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Art from the prestigious Emily Carr University of Fine Art and Design (2006). Brandon also studied Indigenous Governance at the Justice Institute of BC. Brandon was elected in the 2022 sƛ̓ənəq.

    Tumia Knott is a supporter of Hereditary Chief Marilyn Gabriel and does not recognize the council elected on November 27th. Tumia was elected in 1993.
